Meteorological Balloons Used to Contraband Cigarettes Forced Closure of Airport in Lithuania
Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
